The WannaCry cyber attack is probably the largest cyber attack recorded so far. It will likely be eclipsed sometime in the too near future. The attack unfolded over the course of days, and while relatively indiscriminate, had a huge impact. Determining the cause and perpetrators of the attack is tricky, but signs point to North Korea. What does this mean going forward? Like terrorism, cyber attacks are increasingly indiscriminate in their targets and private citizens will undoubtedly be caught up in them. Government efforts to protect themselves and their people sometimes work, but also can backfire.
