Zambia’s Descent from Democracy

Zambia has generally been considered one of the relatively stable and democratic countries in Africa. But in the last year or so, that has been slipping as first independent newspapers were threatened, and now political opposition leaders are under attack. The leader of the opposition has been in and out of jail in the last few months for treason charges. His crime? Not giving way to the presidential motorcade in the streets of Zambia’s capital city.
