South Korea’s Identity Problem

South Korea’s president has now been impeached and removed, with new elections likely in the beginning of May. Given, however, the rising tensions in the region due to provocations from North Korea, uncertainty from Trump, and the deployment of a missile defense shield in South Korea that is making China upset, this is not a good time for the country to be under interim management. In addition, the controversy over the president’s impeachment has revealed wider disagreements in South Korean society about politics and democracy in general, divisions that may or may not be resolved by the next round of elections.
