Fascinating long-form piece that looks at the failed promise of democracy in the Central Asia states that became independent when the USSR collapsed. Nearly all of them have dealt with corruption and kleptocracy since, yet the Soviet Union, not democracy, is what many across Central Asia and in Russia yearn for. Why?
