Yemen’s civil war is horrific and deaths, especially in the past week, have only been increasing. But the biggest news from this poor and war-torn country recently is that one of the armed groups, the Houthis, have been accused of firing missiles off the coast of the country into international waters. These missiles successfully hit a UAE ship and tried and missed, twice, American ships.
In retaliation, the US bombed out three radar sites and now Iran has deployed some of its naval ships into the area. Given that the Gulf of Aden is strategically significant for, among other things, commercial shipping, this is definitely yet another reason to pay attention to what’s going on in Yemen if for no other reason than the US’ increasingly controversial role in the conflict.
