Russia’s Misinformation Campaigns

While Russia of course has various traditional military weapons at its disposable, including nuclear weapons, perhaps the most useful weapon at the moment is Russia’s sophisticated misinformation strategies, both at home and abroad. From spreading false information in NATO allied countries like Sweden to sowing doubt about the US presidential election, the Russian government purposely works to put out plausible sounding but false narratives to confuse the audience and muddy the waters, and, like the “unidentified little green men” strategy, works well in circumventing sanctions, international law, and creating confusion that Russia can then exploit.

The misinformation, purposeful or not, does go the other way though, as what Russian elites thinks about Hilary Clinton comes across as bizarre to American audiences, and Trump is generally just confusing.
