What’s going on now in the South China Sea?

China has been expanding its diplomatic and military efforts to shore up its control of the South China Sea, sparking all sorts of responses from allies and adversaries. Japan and the Philippines have been deepening their military relationship, as both are threatened by a more aggressive China, with Japan on edge in the East China Sea, and the Philippines looking to Japan for military equipment. While fishing and Coast Guard boats are still key items countries are stocking up on, the main focus seems to be on gaining submarines. It seems unlikely, however, that China’s control over the South China Sea will be seriously shaken in the near future, though the East China Sea potentially could be a different story.
