The Battle for Aleppo, one of Syria’s biggest cities and definitely it’s most important outside of Damascus, has been ongoing since the very early months of the war. Since 2013, however, much of the fighting has been at a relative stalemate, with various ever-changing alliances controlling different parts of the city, and importantly, the re-supply routes in and out. Daily life in Aleppo ground to a halt years ago, and tragedy and horror is unfortunately all too common.
The last few weeks, however, have been much more intense as Assad, with Russian help, focuses on gaining control of the city, often by use of barrel bombs, intentionally targeting hospitals, and trying to close all routes into the city. So far, the regime has not taken back Aleppo, but this is a key area to watch in Syria’s civil war.
