Morocco and the African Union

In an interesting piece of news, Morocco has gone back on its decades-old position against the African Union by asking for membership in the group. Long the only African country not a part of the organization due to the AU’s inclusion of Western Sahara, a disputed territory with Morocco, the kingdom has now decided there is more to gain by joining the Union then remaining apart. What that could mean in practice, however, is a new method of arguing the Western Sahara issue, one that more African Union members may now be receptive to. Interesting regional dynamic to keep an eye on.
