The Problem with Fake Democracies

In the wake of the Cold War, a “third wave” of democratization looked to be sweeping the world. Upon closer examination, however, many of these democracies only fulfill basic criteria, such as regular elections, and the existence of opposition parties, but not the more difficult pieces, like free and fair elections, a professional apolitical military, and peaceful transfers of power between political parties. How does the existence of these “fake” democracies harm the concept itself, and the “real” ones that do exist? A worthy question, read more here.
