What’s going on in Western Sahara?

The Western Sahara, called alternatively, Morocco, the last colony of Africa, or a breakaway state, has been pretty much in limbo for decades. Although there has been a long-standing UN peacekeeping mission, the self-proclaimed government has been in exile in Mauritania for decades, and Morocco maintains, with US support, its claims over the territory. This frozen conflict may be flaring up again, with comments made by the UN Secretary-General provoking the Moroccan government into demanding the removal of UN peacekeeping troops, and possibly the return to violence.
