Philippines’ Presidential Election

The Philippines is about to have a presidential election (in early May) with a very interesting slate of candidates with very different views. One area of contestation is over the legacy of out-going President Aquino, who has backed one of the leading candidates but is actively opposed by another. A further area of difference is over the role the country wants to play in the building “great power” competition over the South China Sea, whether to become more closely tied to the US through the TPP, or to work directly with China, possibly to the deterrent of other neighboring nations.

Definitely an election to keep an eye on, despite the fact that a president is allowed only one term, and is therefore by definition a lame duck from day one…
