Not Good Anti-ISIS Options

Air power: Although the West’s current battle plan against ISIS revolves mainly around an air campaign, there’s a long history detailing why this particular plan, in the absence of anything on the ground, will have little, if any, hope of working.

Ground troops: Unfortunately, experiences from intervention in the Lebanese civil war (1975-1990 and the subject of my senior thesis) highlight some challenges, possibly insurmountable ones, that a Western or US ground invasion of Syria would also face. It also probably doesn’t help that the only US forces on the ground versus ISIS right now (in Iraq), are perceived by Iraqis to be on ISIS’ side, not fighting against it.
